Estuaire: How Advanced Emissions Modeling is Reducing Aviation’s Climate Impact

Dec 31, 2024

The aviation industry’s environmental impact, particularly CO₂ emissions, has long been a subject of concern. However, non-CO₂ emissions, especially contrails, are increasingly becoming a focal point of sustainability efforts.

Contrails, those white streaks trailing aircraft, contribute to over 35% of aviation’s total climate impact. Despite their significant contribution, they remain underrepresented in mainstream discussions and regulations. EcoAero interviewed Carolina Placencia from Estuaire on their development of advanced emissions modeling tools, enabling airlines and airports to take measurable steps toward sustainability.

Estuaire’s platform exemplifies how emissions modeling can drive actionable change. By combining aviation data, including aircraft type, engine specifications, and flight paths, with meteorological inputs, their software allows users to monitor emissions, including CO₂ and contrails, for every flight worldwide. Notably, contrail emissions are highly concentrated: just 5% of flights produce 80% of contrails. This means that targeted solutions, such as rerouting a small subset of flights, could significantly reduce aviation’s overall environmental footprint.

The platform’s benefits extend beyond airlines to airports and aviation financiers. For instance, airports seeking sustainability certifications use the data to meet requirements for influencing airline behavior. Similarly, Estuaire’s software supports the growing adoption of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), which not only reduce CO₂ emissions but also lessen contrail formation.

Although Estuaire does not yet utilize artificial intelligence (AI), the company envisions AI as a future enhancement to its modeling capabilities. With AI, platforms like theirs could better predict emissions trends and provide real-time, automated solutions for reducing environmental impact.

In a previous Ecoaero article, an interview with Dr. Sebastian Eastham highlighted the growing research on the environmental dangers of contrails and the urgent need for monitoring. Estuaire, among many companies, is implementing this through its advanced emission modeling tools. As aviation’s climate impact becomes more evident and regulations evolve, emissions modeling tools are poised to become indispensable. Platforms like Estuaire’s enable data-driven sustainability, providing airlines and airports with the insights needed to address both CO₂ and non-CO₂ emissions and pave the way for a more sustainable future for aviation.

Companies like Estuaire are the driving force behind aviation’s expansion into the sustainable realm. At EcoAero, we conduct research and promote technologies like these to ensure they receive the recognition they deserve. We will continue our exploration of sustainable aviation and expand our outreach to engage more people in this field.
